Early Wednesday evening the clothes dryer began to smoke, so the 45-year-old woman sent her son, daughter and grandchild to stay at a friend’s house. She stayed behind to help clear the smoke from the home.
The woman apparently fell asleep, and awoke to more smoke filling the house. She was unable to find the key to the burglar bars, so she called her daughter for help. Her daughter then called 911.
The woman was still conscious and able to speak to firefighters when they arrived, but she died on the way to the hospital.
Firefighters say no smoke alarms were found in the home. Family members dispute that, saying there were alarms, but they were not in working order.
The woman’s daughter tells Eyewitness News her mother had recently celebrated her birthday with a surprise party, and she will be greatly missed by her many friends and family members.
