Clothes Dryer Blamed in Harvey Fire

August 11, 2001A broken clothes dryer caused a blaze that did about $20,000 worth of damage to a house in south suburban Harvey Saturday afternoon, fire officials said.

At about 1 p.m., a homeowner called firefighters to a two-story house at 14912 Center Road in Harvey where she saw a dryer had malfunctioned inside her home and caught fire in the basement, according to Harvey Fire Department Lt. Steve Gorman.

The homeowner and the other people at the house all escaped safely, but Gorman said he did not know how many people were inside the house when the fire started.

Gorman said the fire was contained to the basement and thick smoke drifted through the rest of the house and its attic, causing about $20,000 in damage.

Firefighters had left the scene by 3 p.m., Gorman said.
